On Tuesday, April 29, Holger Mahnicke, the head of the German Consulate General in Kraków, visited the Przemyśl "Morawa", where he took part in the ceremonial awarding of DSD II (Deutsches Sprachdiplom) diplomas to the linguistically gifted youth of the institution, who are learning German at an advanced level.
A day like this at the Prof. K. Morawski High School No. 2 in Przemyśl is a special event. It is a tribute to the hard work of students and the joy of crowning it with a certificate that many call the “Mercedes among language diplomas”. Agnieszka Siuta and Monika Gonet have been the coordinators of the DSD II program at the Przemyśl “Morawa” since its inception. And it all started when the previous director of the facility, Artur Pich, held the first talks on this topic with the German cultural attaché. The shape of the program was outlined in 2010, which finally started in 2014 and has been successfully implemented to this day. The mission begun by A. Pich is continued by the current director of the Second High School, Mariusz Zamirski. German language learning in an extended level is carried out by willing students of Przemyśl primary schools (SP 4, SP 5, SP 14 and SP 16) and II LO in Przemyśl, which is currently the only examination centre in the Podkarpacie region for DSD I and DSD II exams. The latter, i.e. higher level, were successfully passed by students of "Morawa", who on 29 April received language diplomas from the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Krakow, Holger Mahnicke, who was visiting the event. The certificates were given to 12 of this year's graduates: Kacper Cichocki, Karolina Gaweł, Miłosz Gwizdała, Gabriela Hajduk, Krzysztof Kamiński, Michał Kędzierski, Konrad Krochmal, Karolina Kutyła, Zuzanna Pawlak, Natalia Stefańska, Gabriela Tomusiak and Weronika Wojdylak.
A gateway to studying abroadThere are real benefits to obtaining the DSD II certificate.
– With such a diploma, graduates can study abroad – in German-speaking countries without having to take any exams. We also have two winners of the most prestigious DAAD scholarship at our school, which provides financing for the entire studies in Germany. Bartek passed his high school leaving exam in 2019, today he works at Lufthansa, Kinga is currently studying economics with computer science in her second year in Jena. We also have feedback on other graduates of our school who decided to study in Germany thanks to the DSD II exam. A certificate for studies in Poland, on the other hand, gives tangible benefits in the form of additional points during recruitment or exemption from language courses. The main benefit is primarily knowledge of the language at a high level of B2 or C1 – enumerates Agnieszka Siuta.
During the ceremony of presenting DSD II diplomas, in addition to the German consul, also present in “Morawa” were the coordinators of the program from the German side, Christian Menzel and Nina Diehl, together with the translator Danuta Bulatecka-Gaszcz, as well as the head of the Education Department of the Municipal Office in Przemyśl, Renata Kochanowicz-Chalicka, and the principals of the schools in Przemyśl implementing the program – Małgorzata Kozaczenko (SP 14) and Grzegorz Szopa (SP 16).
Over 30 years of friendship pays offThe host of the ceremony, Mariusz Zamirski, emphasized the role of the government of the Federal Republic of Germany in the implementation of the program, which supports the project substantively and provides help in the form of teachers. He also noted that the initiative allows students to expand their language skills and opens up new, international perspectives for them.
– An important aspect of the cooperation is the over 30-year friendship with the city of Paderborn and Goerdeler Gymnasium and the accompanying exchange of students resulting in friendships and close contacts – he said, also thanking the city authorities for financial assistance in implementing the program and expressing hope for further support. He also addressed words of gratitude to the teachers involved in the project.
In turn, the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Krakow, Holger Mahnicke, addressed the youth with the words: - You fully deserve your diplomas, I sincerely congratulate you on passing the exam. I will never achieve such knowledge of Polish as you showed in your German language exams.
The event concluded with a group photo and refreshments, and the musical setting was provided by German-language songs performed by students of II LO: Oliwia Janowska, Julia Makowiecka and Maja Melnyk.
